Danbury Park and Sandon Brook Ford.

Gary and Jackie invite you on another exciting adventure around darkest Danbury.

Directions [to be taken with a pinch of salt]

Leave the Cricketer’s and turn right into Penny Royal Road.
Cross over Woodhill / Bicknacre Road into Sporhams Lane and then take the footpath on the right hand side crossing the common to Fitzwalter lane. Follow Fitzwalter Lane to bring you back onto Woodhill Road. Turn left and follow Woodhill Road passing the Napoleonic Redoubt on the left hand side and turn right into Well Lane. If time permits linger a while at the redoubt and examine the earthworks dug as a potential defence position in case of invasion. [Try to resist digging further defences].

Half way along Well Lane is a small gate leading into Danbury Park where you can wander through the woods and sown passed three lakes which are adorned with Rhododendron bushes showing wonderful colours in Springtime. [All lakes can be circumnavigated if you have a compass and survival rations].

Danbury Twilight At the lower [3rd] lake, take the path to the left of the lake, avoiding the right hand fork which leads down to the lake and continue on to Woodhill Road. Turn left and cross the road taking care with the traffic [they take no prisoners] and walk back up hill to the sharp left hand bend where you take the lane on the right. After passing houses turn right into Woodhill Common Road and continue to the T junction.

At the T junction turn left into Sporhams Lane and continue on to Sandon Brook Ford which you can negotiate by using the footbridge on the right hand side. Linger on the bridge to watch traffic splashing through if the fancy takes you. After heavy rain the brook is quite deep and the 4 x 4’s make quite a spectacle when passing through.
After this breathtaking amusement continue on up Sporhams Lane to the cross roads by which time the beckoning sign of the Cricketers Arms will be in view to lure you back to the Cricketers Arms and a well-deserved drink and maybe one of Jackie’s mouth-watering delights.
